About Richie Zisk

The All-Star designation on card #260 recalls 1978, when Zisk batted clean-up and played right field at San Diego, his second straight All-Star start. A sprained left wrist then put him on the disabled list from July 21 for almost three weeks. In 1979 he hit .262 with 18 home runs and 64 RBIs for Texas.

Richie Zisk was a right-handed outfielder and designated hitter who played 13 seasons for the Pirates, White Sox, Rangers and Mariners and finished with 207 home runs and a .287 average. A third-round Pittsburgh pick in 1967 out of Seton Hall, he waited years behind Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver in the Pirates system; Clemente's death on December 31, 1972 opened the way to regular work. He played in the 1974 and 1975 NLCS, the only postseason series of his career, both lost by Pittsburgh. Traded to the White Sox, he left as a free agent for Texas, later moved to Seattle in an 11-player trade in December 1980, and was named The Sporting News AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1981. He was a two-time All-Star and retired after the 1983 season. He then worked in the Chicago Cubs organization as a minor league hitting instructor, Daytona Cubs hitting coach and manager, and Florida scout. Daytona retired his number 22 in 2007. He entered the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Florida State League Hall of Fame in 2014.
