1979 Topps #22 Mike Jorgensen

About Mike Jorgensen
Texas is on card #22. His 1979 season was interrupted on May 28, when a pitch from Boston's Andy Hassler struck him in the head; a small blood clot was found, and apart from one pinch-hitting turn on May 31 he did not play again until July 1. He hit .223 with 6 home runs in 90 games, then was traded back to the Mets.
Mike Jorgensen was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who played 17 seasons between 1968 and 1985, most of them with the New York Mets and Montreal Expos. Raised in Bayside, Queens, and drafted by the Mets in the fourth round in 1966, he reached the majors as a September call-up in 1968. An April 1972 trade sent him to Montreal with Tim Foli and Ken Singleton for Rusty Staub, and there he won the 1973 Gold Glove at first base and hit .310 with a club-record .444 on-base percentage in 1974. Later stops included Oakland, Texas, Atlanta and St. Louis, and he reached the World Series with the Cardinals in 1985, his final season. He finished with 95 home runs and a .243 average in 1,633 games. In 1995 he took over as interim Cardinals manager after Joe Torre's firing and went 42-54, and he also worked in the club's front office as farm director and scout.
