1979 Topps #120 Jim Sundberg

About Jim Sundberg
A fourth straight Gold Glove arrived in 1979. Sundberg drove in 64 runs and hit .275, and his four errors tied the existing major-league record for the fewest in a season by a catcher at that workload. Topps issued him that year as #120, with the Texas Rangers.
Jim Sundberg caught for 16 big-league seasons and finished with a .993 career fielding average. He spent ten years with the Texas Rangers, won six straight American League Gold Gloves from 1976 to 1981, and was a three-time All-Star. He played at the University of Iowa, reached the majors in 1974 at 22 after a single minor-league season in Double-A, and finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting. Later stops included the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs and a return to Texas. With the 1985 Royals he drove in four runs in Game 7 of the ALCS against Toronto and scored the winning run in Game 6 of the World Series, which Kansas City won over St. Louis. He retired after 1989 with 1,962 games, 1,493 hits and 95 home runs, having caught more games than any other Rangers player, then worked as a Rangers broadcaster and executive. He was inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2003.
