About Rafael Landestoy

Landestoy joined Houston in July 1978 as part of the Joe Ferguson trade and batted .266 in 59 games for the Astros. His rookie card, 1979 Topps #14, listed him with Houston. He took over as the starting second baseman in August 1979 and finished that season batting .270 with 13 stolen bases in 129 games.

Rafael Landestoy was a switch-hitting infielder who played for the Dodgers, Astros and Reds from 1977 through 1984. Los Angeles scout Ralph Avila signed him in 1972. He began in the outfield, moved into the infield at Orangeburg in 1974 and started switch-hitting during spring training in 1977. Houston used him in a career-high 149 games in 1980, when he stole 23 bases. He returned to the Dodgers in May 1983 in a trade that sent John Franco and Brett Wise to Cincinnati. Landestoy finished with 291 hits, a .237 average and 54 stolen bases. He later managed Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Republic and worked as a manager in the Mets' farm system.
