About Tom Hume

Hume went 8-11 with a 4.14 ERA in 1978, working 174 innings. He posted a 2.67 ERA in his last 24 outings, then went 5-0 on Cincinnati's November tour of Japan. His 1979 Topps card was #301 with the Reds.

Tom Hume pitched 11 major-league seasons for Cincinnati and Philadelphia, moving from the starting rotation into a relief career that produced 92 saves. The Reds selected the right-hander in the first round of the January 1972 secondary draft after he attended Manatee Junior College. Johnny Bench encouraged Hume to use the sinker he had discovered by accidentally changing his grip. Hume saved 25 games in 1980 and shared The Sporting News' National League Fireman of the Year award with Rollie Fingers. He was an All-Star in 1982. Away from baseball, Hume and his wife, Susan, survived the November 1980 MGM Grand fire in Las Vegas; helicopters evacuated them from the roof. He later returned to Cincinnati as its bullpen coach.
