About Doug Bair
In 1978 Bair made 70 relief appearances for Cincinnati and saved 28 games, the fourth highest total in the National League. He posted a 1.97 ERA under Sparky Anderson. The next summer his ERA climbed to 4.29 and he lost the closer's job midseason, finishing 11-7 with 16 saves. The Reds won the West, and he took the loss in Game Two of the NLCS against Pittsburgh, giving up the winning run in the tenth inning. Topps listed him with the Reds on card #126.
Doug Bair was a right-handed reliever who pitched 15 major league seasons for seven clubs between 1976 and 1990, going 55-43 with a 3.63 ERA and 81 saves. Pittsburgh took him in the second round in 1971 out of Bowling Green, and he spent six seasons in the Pirates' system, the last four at Triple-A Charleston, before debuting on September 13, 1976 with two scoreless innings against the Mets. Just before the 1977 opener he was traded to Oakland, and the Athletics sent him to Cincinnati the next February. He earned World Series rings with the 1982 Cardinals and the 1984 Tigers, rejoining manager Sparky Anderson in Detroit. He made his first major league start on August 23, 1983, throwing six shutout innings against Texas. He finished where he began, pitching his last game for the Pirates on October 3, 1990, and later coached at Billings and Dayton in the Reds' system. He is in the Bowling Green State University Hall of Fame and the Northeast Indiana Baseball Association Hall of Fame.
