He debuted with the California Angels on June 29, 1977, after hitting .326 in 69 games for Salt Lake City of the Pacific Coast League. He later played for the White Sox, Brewers, Mariners, Cubs, Royals, Angels again and Rangers. In 1985 he hit .328 for the Cubs and was voted the best pinch hitter in baseball. He reached the postseason twice: with the 1981 Brewers, who lost the division series to the Yankees 3-2, and with the 1984 Cubs, who lost the NLCS to the Padres 3-2. He finished with 784 games and a .272 average. After playing he coached the Oakland Athletics from 1999 to 2002, led college programs at Bethany University and Southwestern College, and was hired as Texas Rangers hitting coach in November 2010; he was let go on June 8, 2011. He was also briefly a member of a funk group, Ballplayers, with Lenny Randle.
