Alan Bannister was a right-handed infielder and outfielder who played 972 major league games from 1974 to 1985 for the Phillies, White Sox, Indians, Astros and Rangers. Developed as a shortstop at Arizona State, he won a silver medal with the United States at the 1971 Pan American Games and was the Phillies' first-round pick in the January 1973 draft. He became a utility player, covering every position except pitcher and catcher. Philadelphia sent him to the White Sox with Dick Ruthven and Roy Thomas for Jim Kaat and Mike Buskey on December 10, 1975. In 1977 he played more than 100 games at a single position for the only time, and he later moved between second base and the outfield. He finished with 811 hits and a .270 average. He hit 19 home runs, drove in 288 runs and stole 108 bases. After playing he managed in the Expos system and for the Arizona League Giants, and he was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
