About Ron Blomberg

Blomberg's last major league season was 1978, the year before #42 reached packs. The card lists the White Sox, and he finished with 391 career hits and 184 runs scored. After leaving the game he worked with charitable organizations, later serving as honorary chairman of the Israel Cancer Research Fund.

Ron Blomberg was a left-handed-hitting first baseman, outfielder and designated hitter who played for the New York Yankees from 1969 to 1976 and the Chicago White Sox in 1978. The Yankees took him with the first overall pick of the 1967 draft out of Druid Hills High School in Atlanta, where he had also drawn 125 basketball scholarship offers. He was the first designated hitter in major league history, drawing a bases-loaded walk from Boston's Luis Tiant on April 6, 1973, at Fenway Park; the bat he used is in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. He hit .293 with 52 home runs and 224 RBI in 461 games. A run of injuries limited his playing time in his later seasons. After baseball he managed the Bet Shemesh Blue Sox to the 2007 Israel Baseball League championship, scouted for the Yankees, and was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
