1979 Topps #43 Wayne Twitchell

About Wayne Twitchell
Montreal released Twitchell in February 1979, though his Topps card, #43, still shows him with the Expos. He signed with the Mets on April 4, won his first game for them on June 11 with 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief against Cincinnati, and was later sold to Seattle. His 37 games that year brought a 5.24 ERA, and he pitched his last game on September 27.
Wayne Twitchell was a 6-foot-6 right-hander from Portland, Oregon, taken third overall by the Houston Astros in the 1966 draft. He pitched in the majors from 1970 to 1979 for the Brewers, Phillies, Expos, Mets and Mariners, spending most of that time in Philadelphia, where he went 33-43 in seven seasons. His fastball was his strength, and he added a slider before 1973 after seeking Jim Bunning's counsel. That year he went 13-9 with a 2.50 ERA, third best in the National League, and pitched an inning in the All-Star Game at Kansas City. A collision with Billy Williams at first base on September 18 tore up his right knee and required four hours of surgery. In 1975 he lost his place in the rotation and finished 5-10. His career record was 48-65 with a 3.98 ERA in 282 games. He later worked as a commercial real-estate broker in Portland, was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2006, and died there in 2010.
