1979 Topps #348 Andre Dawson

About Andre Dawson
Dawson batted .275 for the 1979 Expos with 25 home runs and 92 RBI. He also stole 35 bases, one of three seasons in which he reached 30, and from 1977 through 1983 he stole at least 20 bases every year. Topps issued him as Montreal's #348.
Andre Dawson was a right-handed outfielder who played 21 seasons between 1976 and 1996, mostly for the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs, and finished with 2,774 hits, 438 home runs and 314 stolen bases. He is one of eight players with 300 home runs and 300 steals, and he won eight Gold Gloves and made eight All-Star teams. Knee trouble that began with a 1971 high school football injury grew worse on the artificial surface of Olympic Stadium and moved him from center field to right. After the 1986 season, collusion among owners left him with no offer beyond a pay cut from Montreal, so he arrived at Cubs camp with a signed blank contract and settled for $500,000. In 1987 he led the National League with 49 home runs and 137 RBI and won the MVP award, the first player to take it with a last-place team. He had been the runner-up in 1981 and 1983. He finished with the Red Sox and the Marlins, the club in his hometown of Miami. Montreal retired his number 10 in 1997, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010. An uncle gave him the nickname the Hawk when he was a boy.
