1979 Topps #374 Ed Herrmann

About Ed Herrmann
In 1978 Herrmann batted .145 in 35 games for Houston and Montreal, appearing behind the plate in 26. His 1979 Topps #374 carried the Expos name. After his playing career, he managed a youth travel team that won 4 national championships.
Ed Herrmann was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent eleven major league seasons, seven of them with the Chicago White Sox before finishing his career with the Yankees, Angels, Astros and Expos. Signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and drafted by the White Sox that same year, he broke in with Chicago in 1967. His best offensive season came in 1970, when he hit .283 with 19 home runs. Herrmann built a reputation as one of the American League's premier knuckleball catchers, working behind Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood and Eddie Fisher, and he caught Wood through four consecutive 20-win seasons. He made the American League All-Star team in 1974. After his playing days ended in 1978, Herrmann scouted for the Kansas City Royals and coached youth teams in Southern California. He died in 2013 at age 67.
