About Warren Cromartie

The 1978 season began with Cromartie hitless in his first 17 at-bats, yet he finished at .297, best on the Expos. Having worked on his defense over the winter, he led National League outfielders with 24 assists. On July 19 he hit his first major league grand slam, a walk-off against Atlanta. Topps issued his 1979 card as #76, with the Montreal Expos.

Warren Cromartie was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman who spent nine seasons with the Montreal Expos, 1974 through 1983, before a seven-year career in Japan. Drafted in five consecutive drafts, the last three in the first round, he signed with the Expos after the June 1973 secondary draft. With Andre Dawson and Ellis Valentine he formed a young outfield that The Sporting News put on its cover in August 1977. He moved to first base in 1980 and played in the Expos' 1981 postseason, making the leaping catch on Manny Trillo's liner for the last out of the division series against Philadelphia. He signed with the Yomiuri Giants on December 28, 1983, and in 1989 hit .378, won the Central League MVP award and played on a Japan Series champion. He returned for 69 games with the 1991 Royals and hit .313. His major league line was .281 with 61 home runs in 1,107 games. He later worked in radio and on Expos broadcasts, and wrote Slugging It Out in Japan.
