1979 Topps #97 Sam Mejias

About Sam Mejias
Mejias left Montreal in 1979 and played 38 games split between the Cubs and the Reds, with 13 at bats and a .231 average. Seven of those games came with Cincinnati after the Reds bought his contract. Card #97 still lists him with the Expos.
Sam Mejias was a Dominican outfielder who played six big-league seasons, 1976 to 1981, for the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. He signed with Milwaukee as a minor league free agent in October 1970, went to St. Louis in June 1976 to complete the Danny Frisella deal, and debuted on September 6 of that year. In November 1976 he went to Montreal with Bill Greif and Angel Torres for Tony Scott, Steve Dunning and Pat Scanlon. Regarded as a good defensive outfielder, he hit .247 with four home runs and 31 RBI over his career. As a part-time Red he batted .278 in 1980 and .286 in 1981. Cincinnati released him after 1981. He managed in the Reds farm system from 1983 to 1992, then coached first base for the Seattle Mariners from 1993 to 1999 and the Baltimore Orioles in 2007. His brother Marcos also played professionally.
