1979 Topps #235 Steve Rogers

About Steve Rogers
Rogers went 13-12 with a 3.00 ERA in 1979 and made his second straight All-Star team as Montreal won 95 games. He and manager Dick Williams feuded all year, and on July 12 against the Giants Rogers swung at a 3-0 pitch, missed the take sign and was picked off first base after a hit. He is pictured with the Expos on 1979 Topps #235.
Steve Rogers was the ace right-hander of the Montreal Expos and pitched all 13 of his major league seasons, 1973 to 1985, for the club. A University of Tulsa product with a petroleum engineering degree, he was the fourth overall pick of the 1971 draft, and went 10-5 with a 1.54 ERA as a rookie in 1973, finishing second to Gary Matthews in the Rookie of the Year voting. Teammates Ron Fairly and Tim Foli gave him the nickname Cy, after Cy Young. He made five All-Star teams (1974, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983), led the National League with a 2.40 ERA in 1982 while going 19-8, and led it in shutouts in 1979 and 1983. In the 1981 postseason he won two division series games against Philadelphia and a National League Championship Series game against the Dodgers, then gave up the home run to Rick Monday in Game 5. He finished 158-152 with a 3.17 ERA and 1,621 strikeouts in 2,837 2/3 innings.
