1979 Topps #395 Dave Cash

About Dave Cash
Cash's #395 followed a 1978 in which he played 159 games for Montreal but slipped to .252, his first season under .270. He had become a vegetarian, and some observers blamed the diet. In 1979 Rodney Scott took the second-base job, yet Cash hit .321 in 76 games and the Expos finished two games behind Pittsburgh.
Dave Cash was a second baseman who played 1969 to 1980 for the Pirates, Phillies, Expos and Padres. A fifth-round Pittsburgh pick in 1966, he shared the position with Bill Mazeroski and Rennie Stennett, led off for the 1971 World Series champions, and was traded to Philadelphia for Ken Brett after the 1973 season. With the Phillies he became an everyday player and a three-time All-Star, 1974 through 1976, hitting .300 in 1974 and .305 in 1975 with a major-league-best 213 hits. He is credited with the Yes We Can attitude of the Phillies teams that won the 1976 division title. He signed a five-year free-agent contract with Montreal after the 1976 season, lost the starting job in 1979, and ended his career in San Diego in 1980. He finished with 1,571 hits and a .283 average in 1,422 games. Later he coached and managed in the minors and independent leagues and was Baltimore's first base coach in 2006. Willie Stargell and his Pittsburgh teammates called him A.C., for air conditioning, because he stayed cool under pressure.
