About Lance Rautzhan

His 1979 Topps card, #373, lists him with the Dodgers. The season itself was brief: he made 15 relief appearances, went 0-2 and posted a 7.82 ERA over 12 2/3 innings. His last major league game came on June 3, 1979.

Lance Rautzhan was a left-handed relief pitcher who threw for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977 and 1978 and split 1979 between the Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers. He was a third-round Dodgers draft pick in 1970, signed straight out of high school after pitching a perfect game, and turned down a football scholarship to Kentucky to do it. He spent seven and a half years in the Dodgers farm system, led the Double-A Eastern League in complete games in 1975, and made the Triple-A Pacific Coast League all-star team in 1976. In the majors he went 6-4 with a 3.90 ERA and 7 saves in 83 games, all in relief. He got the win in Game 3 of the 1977 NLCS against Philadelphia and pitched in the 1977 and 1978 World Series, both won by the New York Yankees. His father, William, also played minor league ball, in the White Sox system. Rautzhan died of cancer in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on January 9, 2016.
