1979 Topps #290 Dave Lopes

About Dave Lopes
At 34, Lopes hit a career-high 28 home runs in 1979, tying Ron Cey and Steve Garvey for the team lead and breaking Jim Lefebvre's Dodgers record of 24 for a second baseman. He added 73 RBI, 109 runs and 44 steals in 48 tries. He had signed a five-year contract before spring training, and on May 20 he made his first error of the season, ending a streak of 48 straight games without one. His 1979 Topps card is #290, with Los Angeles.
Davey Lopes was a right-handed second baseman and leadoff man, the second-base piece of the Dodgers infield of Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey, which stayed together from 1973 through 1981 and won the 1981 World Series. Tommy Lasorda converted him from outfielder to second base in the minors, and he debuted at 27 on September 22, 1972. He led the National League in steals with 77 in 1975 and 63 in 1976, and that first year he stole 38 consecutive bases without being caught to pass Max Carey's record. He retired with 557 steals, 418 of them for Los Angeles. He was an All-Star from 1978 to 1981 and won the 1978 Gold Glove. Oakland, the Cubs and the Astros followed from 1982 to 1987. He later coached first base for several clubs, including the 1998 Padres and the 2008 Phillies, and managed Milwaukee from 2000 until he was fired 15 games into 2002, finishing 144-195. He died on April 8, 2026.
