1979 Topps #145 Rick Rhoden

About Rick Rhoden
The Dodgers traded Rhoden to Pittsburgh for Jerry Reuss on April 7, 1979, so his Dodgers #145 card came out as he changed clubs. He made one start for the Pirates, on May 8 against Atlanta, allowing four runs in five innings. He went on the disabled list that day and had season-ending shoulder surgery on June 28.
Rick Rhoden was a right-handed starter who won 151 games over 16 major league seasons with the Dodgers (1974-1978), Pirates (1979-1986), Yankees (1987-1988) and Astros (1989). Los Angeles took him in the first round of the 1971 draft out of a Florida high school, and he reached the majors on July 5, 1974. He finished with a 3.59 ERA and 1,419 strikeouts and won Silver Slugger awards as a hitter in 1984, 1985 and 1986. He came up as a power pitcher and later relied on command and deception, and in his later years opponents accused him of scuffing the ball. On June 11, 1988, he started at designated hitter for the Yankees, the first pitcher to do so since the AL adopted the rule. After baseball he became a tournament golfer, played on the Champions Tour, and won the American Century Championship celebrity event eight times.
