About Rick Burleson

Burleson batted .278 with 174 hits in 153 games in 1979. He hit his first major league grand slam on June 4 against Texas and served a three-game suspension after bumping an umpire on May 16. After the season he received Boston's Yawkey Award as the team's most valuable player. Card #125 lists him with the Red Sox.

Rick Burleson was an intense, strong-armed shortstop who played 13 seasons, 1974 to 1987, and spent the first seven of them with the Boston Red Sox. Boston took him fifth overall in the January phase of the 1970 draft. He tied the record for errors in a major league debut, three, on May 4, 1974, then hit .284 in 114 games and won the club's rookie of the year award. He played in the 1975 American League Championship Series and World Series, batting 7-for-24 against Cincinnati. He was an All-Star in 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981, won the 1979 Gold Glove and, in 1980, set a record with 147 double plays by a shortstop. Traded to California with Butch Hobson on December 10, 1980, he won a Silver Slugger in 1981, then lost most of three seasons to a shoulder injury. He finished with 1,401 hits, closing out his career with Baltimore in 1987, and later managed in the minors.
