1979 Topps #270 Butch Hobson

About Butch Hobson
Hobson asked out of the Red Sox lineup on September 22, 1978 in preparation for postseason elbow surgery, and he came back in 1979 to play 142 games at third base. His .496 slugging percentage that year was a career high, and he hit 28 home runs with 93 RBIs. His 1979 Topps card is #270, with Boston.
Butch Hobson played third base for the Boston Red Sox from 1975 to 1980, the California Angels in 1981 and the New York Yankees in 1982, then returned to manage Boston. He played football at Alabama as a safety and backup quarterback under Bear Bryant before the Red Sox took him in the eighth round of the 1973 draft. His major-league debut came on September 7, 1975, when he pinch-ran for Cecil Cooper at Milwaukee. Right elbow and shoulder injuries limited him in 1980 and 1981. He finished with a .248 average, 98 home runs and 397 RBIs. Boston traded him with Rick Burleson to the Angels for Carney Lansford, Rick Miller and Mark Clear on December 10, 1980; the Yankees acquired him for Bill Castro on March 24, 1982. Named International League Manager of the Year at Pawtucket in 1991, Hobson managed the Red Sox to a 207-232 record from 1992 to 1994. He later managed in independent baseball, reaching 1,538 wins by the end of 2023.
