1979 Topps #106 Frank Duffy

About Frank Duffy
Duffy's final season lasted six games and three at-bats with Boston, without a hit, ending with his last game on May 11. The Red Sox released him on May 22. He had become known in Boston for a line about the 1978 collapse, that the team got off a plane and 25 players went off in 25 different cabs. He retired to Tucson, Arizona.
Frank Duffy was a glove-first shortstop who played ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, for the Reds, Giants, Indians and Red Sox. A three-sport athlete at Turlock High School, he graduated from Stanford with a psychology degree, was named a Sporting News All-American in 1967, and was the sixth pick of that year's draft by Cincinnati. Reds manager Sparky Anderson preferred Dave Concepcion at short, and Duffy was moved twice in a single year, first to San Francisco and then to Cleveland. He started at shortstop for the Indians for six seasons and placed near the top of the league's shortstops in fielding percentage in each of his first five years there. He closed his career with the Red Sox in 1978 and 1979, and finished with a .232 average and 26 home runs in 915 games.
