About Jim Rice

Rice shares the 1979 Topps home run and RBI leaders cards, #2 and #3, with George Foster, and his Boston card, #400, carries the All-Star designation. His major-league-leading 15 triples in 1978 made him the only player to lead the majors in triples, home runs and RBI in one season. In 1979 he batted .325 and became the first player with 35 home runs and 200 hits in three straight seasons. Fans elected him to start that summer's All-Star Game in an all-Boston outfield with Carl Yastrzemski and Fred Lynn.

Jim Rice was a Boston Red Sox left fielder and designated hitter who spent all 16 of his major league seasons, 1974 to 1989, with the club. A first-round pick in 1971, 15th overall, he won the 1974 International League Triple Crown at Pawtucket and reached Boston alongside Fred Lynn, the pair being called the Gold Dust Twins. He hit .309 with 22 home runs and 102 RBI in 1975 and finished second to Lynn for Rookie of the Year. From 1977 through 1979 he led the American League in total bases each year. In 1978 he won the MVP award with 46 home runs, 139 RBI and 406 total bases, the first 400-total-base season in the majors in 19 years. He made eight All-Star teams and won Silver Sluggers in 1983 and 1984. He retired with 382 home runs, 2,452 hits and a .298 average. He batted .333 in the 1986 World Series, his only Fall Classic. On August 7, 1982, he carried a four-year-old fan, struck by a foul ball, from the stands to the Fenway clubhouse. The Red Sox retired his number 14 in 2009, the year he was elected to the Hall of Fame in his last year on the writers' ballot, with 76.4 percent of the vote.
