About Art Fletcher
Arthur "Art" Fletcher (January 5, 1885 – February 6, 1950), born in Collinsville, Illinois, reached the majors with almost no seasoning: after breaking in with Staunton, Illinois in 1906, he joined John McGraw's New York Giants in the spring of 1909 and by 1911 was the club's regular shortstop. Fletcher anchored one of the Deadball Era's finest infields — Merkle at first, Doyle at second, Fletcher at short, Herzog at third — and was one of the National League's premier defensive shortstops. A feisty, hard-nosed batter who crowded the plate, he was among the era's most frequently hit players, ranking as the Giants' career leader with 132 hit-by-pitches (141 for his career, 29th all-time) and leading the NL in HBP several seasons. He played in four World Series for McGraw (1911, 1912, 1913 and 1917), served as Giants captain, and closed his playing days with the Philadelphia Phillies (1920–1922). Over 13 seasons he hit .277 with 1,534 hits, 32 home runs and 676 RBI. He later managed the Phillies (1923–1926) and spent decades as a respected New York Yankees coach, sharing in nine world championships. Fletcher is not in the Hall of Fame. His card appears in the base-and-tobacco-heavy "350 Only" series of the landmark T206 set.
