About George Stone
George Robert Stone (1877-1945) was a left fielder from Lost Nation, Iowa, who reached the majors after tearing up the minors, batting .406 for Milwaukee of the American Association in 1904. He debuted with the 1903 Boston Americans but starred with the St. Louis Browns from 1905 to 1910. As a rookie in 1905 he led the American League in hits (187) and total bases (259). His masterpiece came in 1906, when he hit .358 to win the AL batting title over four-time champion Napoleon Lajoie, also pacing the league in slugging (.501) and on-base percentage (.417). Reticent and studious off the field, preferring reading and the violin, he was nicknamed "Silent George." Malaria in 1908 and a 1909 ankle injury sapped his speed and hitting; he retired after 1910 with a career .301 average and 984 hits in 848 games. He is often cited as the only AL batting champion between 1901 and 1928 not enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
