About Harry Steinfeldt

Harry Steinfeldt (born Henry Steinfeldt, September 29, 1877, in St. Louis) grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and broke into pro ball in 1895 as a utility infielder with Fort Worth of the Texas League. He reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds (1898-1905), taking over as the regular third baseman in 1901, and in 1903 he hit .312 while leading the National League with 32 doubles. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1906, Steinfeldt completed the celebrated infield alongside shortstop Joe Tinker, second baseman Johnny Evers, and first baseman-manager Frank Chance. His first Cubs season was his best: he batted .327 (second in the NL) and led the league in hits (176) and RBIs (83) for the record 116-win club. A superb glove man who reportedly was among the first third basemen to wear shin guards, he anchored four NL pennant winners (1906, 1907, 1908, 1910) and back-to-back World Series champions in 1907 and 1908, batting a series-leading .471 in the 1907 sweep of Detroit. A career .267 hitter over parts of 14 seasons, he is famously the only member of that great Cubs infield left out of Franklin Pierce Adams' poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon." He died August 17, 1914, at age 36. Steinfeldt is not a Hall of Famer.
