About Heinie Zimmerman
Heinie Zimmerman learned the game on New York City sandlots and signed with Wilkes-Barre of the New York State League in 1906; the Chicago Cubs bought his contract for $2,000, and he reached the majors in August 1907. An infielder who manned second base, third base, and shortstop, he spent 1907-1916 with the Cubs and 1916-1919 with the New York Giants. His signature 1912 season produced the NL Triple Crown, batting .372 with 14 home runs and 104 RBI while also leading the league in hits (207), doubles, total bases, and slugging; the crown was disputed for decades over his RBI total before SABR research restored it. He again led the NL in RBI in 1917. Chicago writers dubbed him "The Great Zim," likening his popularity to magician Harry Houdini's, and he embraced it. Zimmerman appeared in the World Series for the Cubs (1907, 1908, 1910) and Giants (1917), earning two titles, but is infamous for the botched Game 6 rundown in 1917 and was later cast out of Organized Baseball for game-fixing ties. He finished with a .295 average, 1,566 hits, and 799 RBI over 13 seasons.
