About Jim Scott
Jim Scott, a hard-throwing right-hander born in Deadwood, South Dakota and raised in Lander, Wyoming, backed into pro ball: playing third base for a local nine in 1907, he was pressed into pitching relief against a touring army team and impressed enough to earn a tryout, later winning 30 games for Wichita of the Western Association before the Chicago White Sox bought his contract for $2,000 in 1909. He spent his entire nine-year big-league career with the White Sox (1909-1917), going 12-11 with a 2.30 ERA as a rookie and finishing 107-114 with a superb 2.32 career ERA, among the lowest in history. In 1913 he became the only pitcher ever to lose 20 games with an ERA under 2.00 (20-20, 1.91), and in 1915 he won 24 and tied Walter Johnson for the league lead with 7 shutouts. On May 14, 1914 he held Washington hitless through nine innings but lost 1-0 in the tenth. Nicknamed "Death Valley," reportedly from confusion over his birthplace and a con man of the same name who rode into Chicago on his train, Scott enlisted in the Army in mid-1917, missing the White Sox' World Series title. He was inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
