About Jimmy Williams
James Thomas "Jimmy" Williams (1876-1965), a St. Louis native, came up through semipro and Western League ball, earning the nickname "Homerun" Williams for his prolific power with the St. Joseph Saints in 1897. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1899 and put on one of the greatest rookie hitting displays in history, batting .354 with a league-leading total of triples (27) and a 27-game hitting streak that stood as a Pirates franchise and MLB rookie record for decades. A hard-hitting third baseman who converted to second base, Williams jumped to John McGraw's Baltimore Orioles in 1901, then starred for the New York Highlanders (1903-1907) before finishing with the St. Louis Browns (1908-1909). Over 11 big-league seasons he hit around .270 with roughly 1,500 hits, 138 career triples, and nearly 800 RBIs, leading his league in triples three times and becoming one of only three men (with Hall of Famers Sam Crawford and Earle Combs) to collect 80-plus triples across four straight seasons. He never won a pennant, narrowly missing with the 1904 Highlanders, and later played and coached in the minors. A solid, common subject within the T206 set, not one of its scarce marquee cards.
