About Bobby Morgan
Robert Morris "Bobby" Morgan (born June 29, 1926, in Oklahoma City) signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization out of Classen High School in 1944, but reported to spring training only to be drafted into World War II service in the European Theater. After returning from the war, he blossomed in the minors, earning Triple-A International League MVP honors with the Montreal Royals in 1949 when he won the batting crown at .337 and drove in 112 runs. Morgan reached the majors with Brooklyn in 1950 and played eight big-league seasons (1950-1958) for the Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs. A utility infielder in Brooklyn, he played behind Hall of Famers Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson, All-Star Gil Hodges, and slick-fielding Billy Cox, and appeared in three World Series games (1952 and 1953), twice lining out as a pinch hitter. Traded to the Phillies before 1954, he set career highs as the club's starting shortstop that year, batting .262 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI. Over his career he hit .233 with 487 hits, 53 home runs, and 217 RBI, then managed in the Phillies farm system (1964-66) and scouted for the Orioles, Royals, and Twins. He died June 1, 2023, at age 96. This high-number card (#355) belongs to the scarce final series (#311-407) of the landmark 1952 Topps set, printed in far smaller quantities and famously dumped in quantity, making cards from this run genuinely hard to find in high grade today.
