About Bud Stewart

Edward Perry "Bud" Stewart, born June 15, 1916, in Sacramento, California, was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and one of the American League's most respected pinch hitters. He attended UCLA from 1934 to 1937, then signed with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League in the summer of 1937, where he was a teammate of a young Ted Williams on the Padres' PCL championship club. Stewart reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1941 and led the National League with 10 pinch hits as a rookie. After wartime service interrupted his career, he returned in 1948 and played nine big-league seasons in all (1941-1942, 1948-1954) for the Pirates, New York Yankees, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. In 1948 he finished second in the AL with 13 triples. Over 773 games he batted .268 with 547 hits, 32 home runs, and 260 RBI before retiring in 1954. He is pictured here with the White Sox on card #279 in the fifth series of Topps' landmark 1952 set; he died June 21, 2000, in Palo Alto, California.
