About Allie Clark

Alfred Aloysius "Allie" Clark was a right-handed outfielder born June 16, 1923, in South Amboy, New Jersey (d. 2012). Signed by the Yankees in 1941 for a $250 bonus, he tore through the farm system - hitting .344 with 14 homers for Newark in 1946 after three wartime years as an Army combat medic - before debuting with New York in August 1947. As a rookie he batted .373 in limited duty, then pinch-hit for Yogi Berra in Game Seven of the 1947 World Series and singled home Phil Rizzuto in a 5-2 title-clinching win over Brooklyn. Traded to Cleveland that winter, he hit .310 in 1948 and won another championship, becoming the first player to capture back-to-back World Series with different teams. He later spent the bulk of his big-league time with the Philadelphia Athletics (his club on this 1952 Topps card) and finished 1953 with the Chicago White Sox. Over seven seasons (1947-1953) across four teams he batted .262 with 267 hits, 32 home runs, and 149 RBI in 358 games. Card #278 sits in the fifth series, well below the scarce #311-407 high numbers that make the set's later cards so elusive today.
