1952 Topps #360 George Crowe
1952 Topps #360 George Crowe

About George Crowe
George Crowe was a left-handed first baseman whose 1952 Topps card (#360) is both his rookie card and part of the set's scarce high-number series (#311-407), the run printed in far smaller quantities and famously dumped in quantity, which makes these cards prized today. A remarkable multi-sport athlete, Crowe was named Indiana's first-ever "Mr. Basketball" as a schoolboy in 1939 and later played pro basketball with the barnstorming New York Rens before turning to baseball, starring in the Negro leagues with the New York Black Yankees beginning in 1947. He reached the majors with the Boston Braves in 1952 at age 31 and spent nine seasons (1952-1961) with the Braves, Cincinnati Redlegs, and St. Louis Cardinals, batting .275 with 86 home runs and 332 RBI over 702 games. His finest year came in 1957 with Cincinnati, when he belted 31 home runs (28 before a mid-August knee injury), and he earned his lone All-Star selection in 1958. A dangerous bat off the bench, Crowe briefly held the major-league record for career pinch-hit home runs. Respected as an elder statesman and mentor to Black players, he was praised by Jackie Robinson; Crowe was born in Whiteland, Indiana, in 1921 and died in 2011.
