1952 Topps #321 Joe Black
1952 Topps #321 Joe Black

About Joe Black
Joe Black was a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher whose 1952 rookie card falls in the scarce high-number series (#311-407) of the landmark first Topps flagship set, printed in far lower quantities than earlier cards and prized by collectors today. Born February 8, 1924, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Black starred at Morgan State College and pitched for the Negro Leagues' Baltimore Elite Giants (1943-1950), earning three All-Star selections before the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him. He debuted on May 1, 1952, and delivered one of the great rookie seasons ever: relying on a fastball and a sharp "nickel curve" with pinpoint control, he went 15-4 with 15 saves and a 2.15 ERA out of the bullpen, capturing National League Rookie of the Year honors (chosen by 19 of 22 BBWAA voters) and finishing third in MVP voting. That October, manager Chuck Dressen started him three times in seven days in the World Series against the Yankees; Black won Game 1 with a six-hitter over Allie Reynolds, 4-2, becoming the first African American pitcher to win a World Series game, though he lost Games 4 and 7. He never recaptured that form, later pitching for the Cincinnati Redlegs and Washington Senators through 1957 and finishing 30-12 with a 3.72 ERA. After baseball he worked as a teacher and a Greyhound executive, and died May 17, 2002, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
