About Randy Jackson
Ransom Joseph Jackson Jr. was a right-handed third baseman who reached the majors as a much-hyped college slugger. He starred in baseball at Texas Christian and the University of Texas while in the Navy's V-12 program, winning Southwest Conference batting titles before the Chicago Cubs signed him in 1947; he debuted on May 2, 1950, at Wrigley Field. Nicknamed "Handsome Ransom" — a tag credited to Des Moines Register sportswriter Sec Taylor in 1948 — Jackson anchored third base for the Cubs (1950-1955) and earned back-to-back National League All-Star selections in 1954 and 1955, seasons in which he hit 19 and 21 home runs. Traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers to succeed the aging Jackie Robinson, he batted .274 with 8 homers and 53 RBI in 1956 and played in that year's World Series against the Yankees, and on September 28, 1957, he hit the final home run in Brooklyn Dodgers history. Over ten seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers, and Cleveland Indians (1950-1959), Jackson batted .261 with 103 home runs and 415 RBI. He died in 2019 at age 93. This rookie card sits in the coveted high-number series (#311-407), printed in far smaller quantities than the rest of the set and famously scarce today.
