1952 Topps #378 Les Fusselman

About Les Fusselman
Lester Leroy Fusselman (March 7, 1921 - May 21, 1970) was a right-handed catcher who signed into the St. Louis Cardinals farm system in 1942, then had his career interrupted by three years in the U.S. Army during World War II. Born in Pryor, Oklahoma, he graduated from Payson-Seymour High School in Illinois and attended Western Illinois University before spending years climbing through upper-level Redbird affiliates, including the Columbus Cardinals, Houston Buffaloes, and Rochester Red Wings, where he batted .274 with 717 hits across his minor-league career. Fusselman finally reached the majors at age 31, debuting on April 16, 1952, and serving as the backup to workhorse catcher Del Rice, who started 137 of the Cardinals' 154 games that year. He appeared in just 43 big-league games over the 1952 and 1953 seasons, hitting .169 with 1 home run and 3 RBI; his lone highlight came on May 9, 1952, when he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored against Cincinnati. He played his final MLB game on June 12, 1953, and died in Cleveland in 1970 at age 49. His card is part of the scarce high-number series (#311-407) of the landmark 1952 Topps set - the same run that contains the famous Mickey Mantle #311 - printed in far smaller quantities and heavily discarded, which makes even common-player cards like this rookie issue genuinely rare and desirable today.
