About Ed Erautt
A Portland, Oregon native and Lincoln High School product, right-hander Ed Erautt (born Edward Lorenz Sebastian Erautt) was signed by the Pacific Coast League's Hollywood Stars in 1942 at age 17, discovered while working as a clubhouse boy for the Portland Beavers. After Army service in World War II, he won 20 games for Hollywood and led the PCL with 234 strikeouts in 1946, earning a trip to the majors. Erautt debuted with the Cincinnati Reds on April 16, 1947, and pitched parts of six big-league seasons for Cincinnati (1947-51) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1953), his card appearing here in the 1953 Topps high-number series. His finest year came in 1949, when he posted a 3.36 ERA in 39 games for a chronically second-division Reds club. He finished 15-23 with a 4.86 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 164 games, though he was far more successful in the minors, stringing together 20-, 21-, 18-, 16- and 15-win seasons and making the 1952 Triple-A All-Star team at Kansas City. His older brother, catcher Joe Erautt, reached the majors with the White Sox, and the two formed a childhood "brother battery." Erautt later coached, umpired and drove the bus for youth baseball in San Diego. He died in 2013 at age 89.
