About Ken Strong
Ken Strong was the battering-ram halfback of NYU's late-1920s powerhouse, and in 1928 he led the nation in scoring with 162 points — so many that coach Chick Meehan's crew, which fired a cannon for every Violets score, could barely keep it loaded. He was a consensus All-American that fall, the player Grantland Rice called 'George Gipp, Red Grange and Chris Cagle rolled into one human form.' Strong starred fourteen professional seasons for the Staten Island Stapletons and New York Giants, earning All-NFL honors four times, and delivered his signature performance in the 1934 'Sneakers Game' championship win over the Bears, scoring 17 points — a title-game record that stood for nearly three decades. He also played minor-league baseball, once hitting four home runs in a game, before a wrist injury ended that pursuit. The Giants retired his No. 50, and he was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1957 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967.
