About Bob Nieman

Signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1948 for a $1,500 bonus after attending the University of Cincinnati, Bob Nieman was a right-handed corner outfielder whose pro debut was delayed by a kidney ailment (nephritis) tied to his Army service. He authored one of the most memorable debuts in baseball history: on September 14, 1951, at Fenway Park, the St. Louis Browns rookie homered in his first two major-league at-bats off Red Sox pitcher Mickey McDermott, becoming the first player ever to do so and the first to homer twice in a debut game since 1889. Over 12 seasons (1951-1962) the well-traveled Nieman played for the Browns, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, and San Francisco Giants, batting .295 with 1,018 hits, 125 home runs, and 544 RBI in 1,113 games. Though injuries kept him to roughly 100 games a year and he was never named an All-Star, he was voted Most Valuable Oriole in 1956 and finished seventh in AL MVP balloting. His 1956 Topps card (No. 267, a high-number series-four issue) pictures him with the White Sox, the club he played for in 1955 before joining Baltimore. After retiring he scouted for several organizations; he died in 1985 at age 58.
