About Dale Mitchell

Dale Mitchell was a left-handed-hitting left fielder born August 23, 1921, in Colony, Oklahoma. A standout at the University of Oklahoma, he signed with a Cleveland Indians affiliate in 1946 and debuted in the majors that September, going on to spend nearly his entire career (1946-1956) with Cleveland. A superb contact hitter, Mitchell batted .312 for his career and struck out just 119 times in 3,984 at-bats. He led the American League in hits in both 1948 and 1949, collecting 203 hits, 161 singles, and 23 triples in 1949, and was named an All-Star in 1949 and 1952. Mitchell was part of Cleveland's 1948 World Series championship club and its 1954 pennant-winning team that set an AL record with 111 wins. Sold to the Brooklyn Dodgers late in 1956, he earned lasting fame that October as the final out of Don Larsen's perfect game in the World Series, taking a called third strike from umpire Babe Pinelli that Mitchell always insisted was a ball. This is a high-number card (#268) from the fourth series. He died January 5, 1987.
