1956 Topps #266 Don Ferrarese
1956 Topps #266 Don Ferrarese

About Don Ferrarese
A left-handed pitcher who batted right-handed, Don Ferrarese was an Oakland, California native who signed his first professional contract in 1948 at age 18 and, after attending Saint Mary's College and losing time to Korean War military service, starred for his hometown Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League, winning 18 games in 1954. He reached the majors with the Baltimore Orioles in 1955 and pitched eight big-league seasons (1955-1962) for the Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals, working both as a starter and a reliever. His finest stretch came in 1956, the year of this card: on May 5 he struck out 13 Indians in a 2-1 loss, and on May 12 at Yankee Stadium he held the New York Yankees hitless through eight innings before Andy Carey's ninth-inning single broke it up. Standing just 5-foot-9, he was tagged with the nickname "Midget" for his small stature. Ferrarese finished with a 19-36 record, a 4.00 ERA and 350 strikeouts over 183 appearances. He is not a Hall of Famer.
