About Sandy Consuegra
Sandalio Simeón Consuegra Castellón was a Cuban-born right-handed pitcher who reached the majors after a long apprenticeship in his homeland, starring in Cuban amateur ball in the late 1930s and 1940s before pitching in Mexico and Venezuela and gaining reinstatement to Organized Baseball with the Havana Cubans in 1949. He debuted with the Washington Senators on June 10, 1950, and over eight seasons pitched for the Senators (1950-1953), Chicago White Sox (1953-1956), Baltimore Orioles (1956-1957) and New York Giants (1957). His signature year came in 1954 with the White Sox, when he went 16-3 to lead the American League in winning percentage (.842) with a 2.69 ERA, earning his lone All-Star selection. For his career he was 51-32 with a 3.37 ERA and 26 saves across 248 appearances. Known in the U.S. as "Sandy" and in Cuba as "Potrerillo" — "little pasture land," after his hometown — he was later inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame (in exile) in 1977. This 1956 Topps card is a Series 4 high number.
