About Detroit Tigers Team

Card #213 is the Detroit Tigers team card, a group portrait of the mid-1950s Bengals. Charter members of the American League in 1901, the Tigers by this point had already captured World Series titles in 1935 and 1945, the latter their most recent championship as the 1956 set went to press. The 1955 club pictured here finished 79–75 (.513), fifth in the AL and 17 games behind the pennant-winning New York Yankees, under veteran manager Bucky Harris. The season's headline belonged to a 20-year-old right fielder, Al Kaline, who hit .340 to become the youngest player in major-league history to win a batting title; he added 200 hits, 27 home runs and 102 RBI and would spend all 22 of his big-league seasons in Detroit, earning the nickname "Mr. Tiger" and eventual election to the Hall of Fame in 1980. Kaline was flanked by shortstop Harvey Kuenn (.306), slugging third baseman Ray Boone (20 homers, 116 RBI), and a young pitching staff led by Billy Hoeft (16–7, 2.99 ERA) and Frank Lary. This card sits in the set's third series (#213), which was printed only with the white back stock, so it is not subject to the white/gray back-stock variation found among the lower numbers.
