About Don Hoak
A scrappy right-handed third baseman out of Roulette, Pennsylvania, Don Hoak served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization and reaching the majors in 1954. Over 11 seasons he played for the Dodgers (1954-55), Chicago Cubs (1956, his team on this card), Cincinnati Redlegs (1957-58), Pittsburgh Pirates (1959-62) and Philadelphia Phillies (1963-64), batting .265 with 1,144 hits, 89 home runs and 498 RBI. In Game 7 of the 1955 World Series he manned third base in place of Jackie Robinson as the Dodgers won their only title; five years later he anchored the 1960 Pirates champions who upset the Yankees, finishing second to teammate Dick Groat in NL MVP voting. His lone All-Star nod came in 1957 with Cincinnati, where he led the National League with 39 doubles. Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince dubbed him "Tiger" for his ferocity on the field. Hoak later broadcast, coached and managed in the minors, and died of a heart attack in 1969 at age 41.
