About Bob Miller
Robert John Miller was a right-handed pitcher born June 16, 1926, in Detroit. He graduated from St. Mary of Redford High School, served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II, and pitched at the University of Detroit before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in January 1948 for a reported $25,000 bonus. After winning 19 games for the Class B Terre Haute Phillies, he was recalled and debuted on September 16, 1949. Miller was a member of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the surprise Phillies club that won the National League pennant; he opened that season with eight straight wins before a back injury (suffered rushing to catch a train) hampered him, and he finished 11-6 with a 3.57 ERA over 174 innings, ending as runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year behind Sam Jethroe. He started Game 4 of the 1950 World Series against the Yankees, taking the loss as New York completed a sweep. Miller spent his entire major-league career (beginning in 1949) with the Phillies, compiling a 42-42 record with a 3.96 ERA and 263 strikeouts. This card, #334, falls in the set's fourth-series high numbers. After baseball he became head baseball coach at the University of Detroit Mercy, winning 896 games, and was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. He died November 27, 2020, at age 94.
