About Rube Walker
Albert Bluford "Rube" Walker was a left-handed-hitting catcher who signed with the Chicago Cubs organization (Erwin of the Class-D Appalachian League) out of Lenoir High School in North Carolina in 1944. He reached the majors with the Cubs on April 20, 1948, and spent 11 National League seasons through 1958, chiefly as a dependable second-string catcher across 608 games, batting .227 with 35 home runs and 192 RBI. A June 1951 trade sent him to the pennant-bound Brooklyn Dodgers, where he served for years as backup to Hall of Famer Roy Campanella; with Campanella hurt, Walker caught the deciding 1951 tie-breaker game in which Bobby Thomson hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." He was also a member of Brooklyn's 1955 World Series champions, hitting .252 in 48 games that year. His nickname traced to his boyhood, when as a Lenoir batboy he idolized local star Rube Robinson. Walker's greatest legacy came after his playing days: as the New York Mets' pitching coach from 1968 through 1981—including the 1969 "Amazin' Mets" champions—he is widely credited with instituting the five-man starting rotation, a philosophy embraced by Tom Seaver and later adopted throughout the game. This high-number card (#333) is part of the 1956 set's fourth series. Walker died in 1992.
