About Don Larsen
A right-handed pitcher born August 7, 1929, in Michigan City, Indiana, Don Larsen was signed by the St. Louis Browns in 1947 and reached the majors with them in 1953. When the franchise became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954, he endured a 3-21 season, and was then traded to the New York Yankees before the 1955 campaign. It was in pinstripes that Larsen authored one of baseball's most famous feats: on October 8, 1956, in Game 5 of the World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, he retired all 27 batters he faced, throwing just 97 pitches from a new no-windup delivery in a 2-0 Yankee win. It remains the only perfect game (and the only no-hitter) in World Series history, capped by striking out pinch-hitter Dale Mitchell. Nicknamed "Gooney Bird" for his gangly build and clubhouse antics, Larsen pitched 14 seasons through 1967 for seven clubs, finishing 81-91 with a 3.78 ERA and 849 strikeouts. A capable hitter, he also belted a grand slam earlier in the same 1956 season. This high-number card (#332, fourth series) captures him the year of his perfect game.
