About Frank Malzone

Born February 28, 1930, in the Bronx, New York, Frank Malzone was signed by Red Sox bird-dog scout Cy Phillips out of Samuel Gompers High School in 1947, then lost the 1952-1953 seasons to Korean War-era military service before reaching the majors. A right-handed third baseman celebrated for his glove, he became Boston's regular at the position in 1957 and starred there through 1965, closing his career with the California Angels in 1966. In that breakout 1957 season he hit .292 with a career-high 103 RBIs, and over 12 major-league seasons he batted .274 with 1,486 hits, 133 home runs, and 728 RBIs across 1,441 games. Malzone was an American League All-Star in 1957, 1958, 1959, 1963, and 1964, and he won the first three American League Gold Gloves at third base (1957-1959) - the inaugural 1957 award spanned both leagues - remaining the last AL third baseman so honored before Brooks Robinson's long run. He was elected to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in its inaugural 1995 class (not the National Baseball Hall of Fame). This high-number card (#304) comes from the fourth and scarcest series of the 1956 Topps set.
