About Jim Dyck
Jim Dyck was a versatile third baseman and left fielder whose professional path began in 1940, when a St. Louis-bound future star was still years away and Dyck earned a contract at a Yankees tryout camp in Kansas City under scout Bill Essick. He turned pro in 1941 with Norfolk of the Class D Western League as a pitcher, later converting to a position player, before World War II interrupted his career; he served in the Navy Air Corps, flying Corsair fighters off the escort carrier USS Windham Bay in the Pacific. After hitting .321 for San Antonio in 1950 and 27 home runs in 1951 to earn Texas League MVP honors, Dyck debuted with the St. Louis Browns in 1951. His finest big-league season came in 1952 (.269 with career highs of 15 home runs and 64 RBIs), earning a spot on The Sporting News All-Star team. On July 16, 1953, he hit the third of three consecutive Browns first-inning home runs against the Yankees, tying a major-league record, and he contributed a key catch to Bobo Holloman's 1953 no-hitter. Dyck also played for Cleveland (1954), the Baltimore Orioles (1955-56)—the team on this high-number card #303—and Cincinnati (1956), finishing a six-year career as a .246 hitter with 26 home runs and 114 RBIs in 330 games.
