About Eddie Robinson

William Edward "Eddie" Robinson (1920-2021) was a left-handed first baseman who signed his first professional contract in 1939 and, after four minor-league seasons and World War II service in the U.S. Navy, spent a 13-year major-league career (1942, 1946-1957) with seven American League teams: Cleveland, Washington, the Chicago White Sox, the Philadelphia and Kansas City Athletics, the Yankees, and Detroit. He was the Indians' starting first baseman on their 1948 World Series champions, hitting .300 in the Series as Cleveland beat the Boston Braves in six games. A four-time All-Star (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953), he started at first base for the American League in 1949 and again in 1952, and his 29 home runs for the 1951 White Sox stood as a club record for nearly 30 years. Over 1,315 games he batted .268 with 1,146 hits, 172 home runs, and 723 RBI. By the time of this 1956 Topps high-number card he was a part-time first baseman and pinch hitter for the New York Yankees, having reached the 1955 World Series with them. After his playing days Robinson became a longtime scout and executive, serving as general manager of the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers; he lived to 100 and was the last surviving member of the 1948 Indians championship team.
